Summary:

Dreamless starts off where Starcrossed ended. As usual, I was intigued why it's titled dreamless. Good thing I got it in the middle part. Now that Helen and Lucas believes that their love is forbidden, they can't do anything but stay away from each other. No matter how they force themselves to remember that they are cousins and are not allowed to be together, they just can't stop the way they feel for each other. But there are more suppressing things they need to think and do than their love for each other. Their responsibilities for their love ones is most important. Helen is determined to stop the furies in haunting the demigods to kill each other. Now that Hector is an outcast as well, she promised that she'll do everything to bring back Hector to his family.

My Review:

There's the love triangle I'm waiting for! Orion is the best character to compete with Lucas. Though I'm still rooting for Lucas, who else can compete with Paris but Adonis himself! haha
Still, I'm totally frustrated with Lucas and Helen, they are being eaten with their heartache. Of course I don't blame them, I would feel the same if I'm in their shoes. But... because of this, they didn't even thought of doing the math!!! Hello! Ajax died 19 years ago and Helen is 17 only, isn't that some basic his family should know. Especially Castor, Pandora figured it our immediately, how come Castor and Pallas didn't??? I really thought this would be cleared up in this book so I was quite disappointed. I hope Helen and Lucas would be ok for the next book, my heart is breaking along with them. I think Angelini has some grudge with Helen. You see, she's literally put her to hell everyday and stil deprived her for the love of her life. Poor Helen.. :(
Daphne is such a mystery, I don't know her motives why she told Helen and Lucas are cousins. Maybe, she want Orion for her, but still I'm not sure about my guess. Since she has little exposure in the book, I can't figure much about Helen's mother.

I'm being overwhelmed by mythology characters, but I'm loving it. I really love Angelini's version of Persephone and her part in the story. A lot of gods and demigods were mentioned. Though they were only told for a small amount of time, their parts and connection in the story is so natural and really made the story more amazing. Angelini's talent of putting mythology, Ya and fantasy story together is incredible. The story became a new mythology, still preserving the gods' famous characters. ALl characters are alive (myth gods and angelini's characters) and you can feel each has their own individualities and own stories. It feels like if Angelini wanted to, she could create different books for each character without elaborate introductions, that's how strong she made them.

Summary from Goodreads:

Set on the island of Nantucket, STARCROSSED tells the tale of Helen Hamilton, a young woman whose destiny is forever altered when she meets Lucas Delos and tries to kill him in front of her entire high school. Which is terribly inconvenient, not only because Lucas is the most beautiful boy on the island, but also because Helen is so achingly shy she suffers physical pain whenever she is given too much attention.

Making matters worse, Helen is beginning to suspect she’s going crazy. Whenever she’s near Lucas or any member of his family she sees the ghostly apparitions of three women weeping bloody tears, and suffers the burden of an intense and irrational hate. She soon learns that she and Lucas are destined to play the leading roles in a Greek tragedy that the Three Fates insist on repeating over and over again throughout history. Like her namesake, Helen of Troy, she’s destined to start a war by falling in love. But even though Lucas and Helen can see their own star-crossed destiny, they’re still powerfully attracted to each other. Will they give up their personal happiness for the greater good, or risk it all to be together?

My Review:

This is a very different love story inspired by the famous mythology's Helen of Troy. Instead of love at first sight, the story started with "hate at first sight" and when I say hate, literally hate. The instant Helen saw the new student Lucas, there's only one thing she's sure of... she needs to kill him. She doesn't understand why she feels this way over Lucas and his family, and why everytime she sees any of his family, 3 crying women who seems like ghosts appears. the worse part is, the more she tries to avoid the Delos Family, the more it seems fate wants them to bump into each other.

Then something good happen..or not. The ghosts aka furies disappeared along with the hatred Helen and Lucas feel for each other and attraction blossoms. But as they are just about to realize that they are falling for each other, they found out they can't be together or a war, same as the Trojan War might happen again. As the story of Helen of Troy and Paris will repeat itself on Helen and Lucas other things will go their way to hinder their love for each other.

A very tragic love story and there's not even a love triangle! At first Hector would enter as third party. But not. I love all the characters, starting from Jerry, Kate, Helen's friends and the Delos family. It feels like all characters reach me in some way. It's nice since the story does not solely focus on Helen and Lucas but to others as well. It makes the story not boring. But I always love the part where Helen and Lucas are together, if this is a movie, I'll say they have the perfect chemistry. Both characters are really cute and so adorable when they are together, even when they are trying to kill each other at the start.

I love the mysteries in the story. Helen's dreams, her necklace, her mother, which house does she belongs too, her power, the enemy, Cassandra herself is a mystery even the title "stacrossed" is intriguing. All this makes me don't want to stop reading but it does not makes me feel frustrated with lots of mysteries. I loved it more when the revelation part came, it did not came all in one revelation. They were reavealed not on fast-paced (others have this when the story is about to end) abut not too slow either. All revelations came naturally and not forced.

I totally love this book! Everytime I read a book, I have this tendency of guessing/plotting what would come next, how it would end and how certain parts would be connected on the next part. I usually guesses right that's why I sometimes say that books are plottable. But with this book, I never even had the chance to guess. I was totally blank while reading this. Which I love since I don't even tred guessing, and just enjoying what Ms. Angelini will give me and she's very good at surprising me. Congrats to the author for writng such a lovely book. I'm currently reading Dreamless as per this writing. :)

Embrace (Violet Eden Chapters #1) by Jessica Shirvington

Summary from Goodreads:

It starts with a whisper: “It’s time for you to know who you are…”

Violet Eden dreads her seventeenth birthday. After all, it’s hard to get too excited about the day that marks the anniversary of your mother’s death. As if that wasn’t enough, disturbing dreams haunt her sleep and leave her with very real injuries. There’s a dark tattoo weaving its way up her arms that wasn’t there before.

Violet is determined to get some answers, but nothing could have prepared her for the truth. The guy she thought she could fall in love with has been keeping his identity a secret: he’s only half-human—oh, and same goes for her.

A centuries-old battle between fallen angels and the protectors of humanity has chosen its new warrior. It’s a fight Violet doesn’t want, but she lives her life by two rules: don’t run and don’t quit. When angels seek vengeance and humans are the warriors, you could do a lot worse than betting on Violet Eden…

My Review:

I think this book started awkwardly... At the start, I have to stop and check it on goodreads again to make sure I'm reading the first book. The story started which feels like the reader is expected to know what's going on. Good thing there are lots of explanations afterwards. Though The story is so cliche (nice girl with a kicking bestfriend finds out she's part supernatural -Awry is something like this and most of others stories), I really find this book interesting. It's so plottable but in a nice way, the story seems familiar yet it's so refreshing to read. Maybe because the story is so full of details regarding the angels and Lilith. I find myself enjoying and surprised that I'm already halfway through, but it feels like I just started reading. The story is like a very very long introduction of a story. So I'm having high expectation on the next book :)

What I love about this book is that the story didn't hurry. I mean, the story flowed naturally. The story-telling is consistent. Minor Details provided on certain part are connected on major details on other part, though plottable, it makes the story more interesting.

For the characters, I don't know if I love Violet or not. Though Phoenix had majorly contributed on her actions, there's part of me that feels there's more to this story that needs to be revealed. And of course, I love Lincoln!!!

With regards to the writing, I couldn't find fault. The story was well-thought of and Ms. Shirvington has proven her talents on creating a very interesting story from the famous angel and Lilith stories.

Summary:

In this third book of Premonition series, Reed and Evie's struggle to be  together continues. Though already bonded, this does not stop the others such as Brennus, the leader of the Gancanagh and other creatures and coveting the half angel Evie. With the enemies knowing the greatest weakness of Evie, they used Evie's loved ones to get to her.
Evie was forced to make a contract with Brennus in a "persephone-Hades-style" contract. And as she lives with the gancanagh, she learns they real nature, understands them and almost felt belongingness with them. But Reed and Russel would not let that happen. This third book tells the battle each of our beloved characters are fighting. Evie's struggle to free herself from the contract, Russel's undying love for her soulmate and Reed's battle to save Evie and her loved ones.

Review:

I have mixed emotions with regards to this book. At first, I'm totally annoyed on Evie's stupidity. I'm controlling myself from shouting and pulling my hair off due to frustration. What in the hell does "stay put" and "stay behind me" don't you understand Geneveive???!!! I can't believe you did that to Reed! Aargh! If not for Reed, I would have stopped myself from reading this book.

Then, the gancanagh intrigued me. They don't seem bad in the inside and I'm starting to like their characters a bit. But it makes me confuse on Evie's thoughts with them. Evie's character with Brennus is not that consistent. Sometimes, she thinks of them as enemy, then as her family, one part even tells she loves Brennus. I know the idea of "playing the part" but it seems like she's not playing it.

Then, there's her soulmate Russel. For the previous books, I'm enjoying the love triangle between Russel, Evie and Red. I even love the idea of soulmate vs true love. But with Brennus. And now Casimir on the picture, isn't it just too much to have so many characters wanting for a single person. Yeah, I get it that Evie's special... But still...

My heart breaks for Reed. What Evie's doing with her is so totally unfair. I know they love each other so much but it feels like Reed is being betrayed... And it's just so unfair!!

In general, I like the story eventhough in most parts, it annoyed the hell out of me. But, It feels like the author has so many ideas to put in the story that she can't choose so she just threw it all up in the story. It's just too jumbled. Gancanagh on the left, fallen on the right, ifrit somewhere and dominion in front. It's just overwhelming... Still it ended up nice. I hope next book would just focus on to something and not it to branch too much.

Torned between being with Chase and her fear for the methods of New Haven, Caitlin struggled to decide what he believes is right and wrong. But choosing what is right means leaving Chase, but she has no choice. She won't let anyone do to other children what they have experienced.

My Review:

Undeniably a page-turner. I'm reading this book while walking, on my way home, waiting in-line and while working (don't tell my boss!). I can't stop reading! Every time I try to stop and rest my eyes, I could not stop thinking of Caitlin, Chase, Kismet and even Izzy. The characters are so adorable... all of them! I think this is even better than Xmen with the love story and all! The book is a perfect mix of action, heavy drama, romance and light comedy.

I really like Caitlin's character, she's not the typical damsel in distress heroine, she's strong and dependent. I really like her power- telekinesis and empathy.  With the book written in her POV, I could see all side of the stories. Still, some mysteries are left. However, I'm quite disappointed that her powers were not put in good use at the right time. About the romance part, I'm really confuse who's she's really going to end up with- Chase or Kismet?? of course I'm rooting for Chase! I feel for Chase, why he has to do what he's doing. But does she needs to feel Madison as well??? Can't we just remove that part? I'm starting to hate Madison, and  with Chase feeling her as well, it just lessen the sweetness of the soul mate part!

This book totally broke my heart, I did not end up crying but still, this book is full of emotions. And I'm so thankful for the last part, the teaser part I mean. At least now I would not spend my day crying for Chase. :)
Hands down to the authors!

Summary from Goodreads

A TEENAGE GIRL. A BROKEN HEART. AND A BOY WHO TRIES TO MEND IT.

Butterflies. Little, fluttering butterflies. That’s what fifteen-year-old Willow Flynn feels in the pit of her stomach every time the mysterious boy is near. But Willow has other things to contend with as she deals with the tragic loss of her father, as well as her emotionally preoccupied mother, while being uprooted to a new house, a new school, a new life, far away, on an island, in the middle of nowhere.

At the beginning of the school year, the sickly, but cute Michael sends Willow the first of many cryptic notes during homeroom. He stares at Willow and gives her the creeps. Michael never returns to school after that, but Willow ends up connecting with the poetic boy on-line where they strike up an unusual friendship.

As Willow attempts to fit in and find her niche in the ever-cliquey high school world, she is further confused by Michael who strives to win her over and mend her broken heart. But will he be able to, especially when his own existence remains so uncertain?

My Review

I have to thank the author first for sending me a copy.. thanks a bunch!

What I love about the this story is that it tackles some real teen problems. Being the new girl, trying to fit in and looking for that group you really belong to. Also, it gives bit of messages with regards to family, reaponsibilities and consequesnces. After reading the book, I find the story to be "ok" thus the three stars :)

BUT (of course, there's always the but), while reading the book, it feels like reading pieces of a teen journal writing for herself and not to tell a story. During the first part, I notice how the author suddenly jumps to another part and then do some recap. The transition of events is not so smooth. It's like counting like this... 1 2 3 6 5 4 7 8 10 9.. Hope it tells what I mean. Also, at the first half of the story, I started to wonder if the book was really supposed to be a love story (the plot was quite misleading) 'cause the first part focuses on Willow's rebellion and friendships and just some glimpse of Michael. Moreover, The story didn't reached me enough to be hooked up with it, there are lot of details and elaborations that it overwhelms the emotions it supposed to express. It just feels like the whole story is not so focused.

The story got interesting at the last quarter of the story when Michael and Willow had their date for the first time with their little brothers. "finally! There's the story!" in here, the story went fast-paced which I love since there's so few pages left and there are still unanswered question. Good thing, all major question are answered. But there are some bits left, which I wished was explained. First, the siblings Tessa abd Jacques, I don't want The story to end with them being the bad guys. It's just that I feel like their characters were not justified. As well as Willow's friends back home.

All in all it's a nice story. Suggestion though, please try to edit the plot summary showed in goodreads. There's more for this book than a love story of a new girl and a sick guy.

My Review

"The champion must not fear, the champion must not waver"

Elisa is the bearer of the Godstone. And as the bearer, a lot is expected from her. The bearer is the champion, chosen by God himself to be His right hand and whose life's mission is to serve. Greatness is expected from the bearer. But Elisa does not feel this at all, for she does not possess anything of greatness or anything that could make her standout. This is what Elisa believes all her life.
Then he was married to King Alejandro, where her status as his wife is hidden in his husband's kingdom. Elisa felt more assured of what she feels, she has nothing to offer as the bearer. But when group of teens (the same age as hers) kidnapped her and brought her to their village, she bit by bit realizes her purpose. In this village, everyone sees her as their hope, though she still fears that she could offer nothing, her character and wit shows otherwise.

I did not expect too much from this book and I was so wrong! Though I find the first part to be slow-paced, everything became exciting when she was kidnapped. I'm not really into books covering wars, so it surprised me to find this book entertaining, especially Elisa's plans. Her plans in war are really good, so I find myself imagining hitting her in the head into thinking she has nothing to offer the people in the village. How could she think such when she is even better than King Alejandro in terms of war. Additionally, Elisa is a princess and the bearer of the godstone, but she's not spoiled. That's for sure! I really like her character because she embodies a very real person. She loves her servants, knows how to fight, thinks well even under pressure. That makes her more deserving to be the champion. So how could she question her worth??

For Elisa's love, throughout the story, I could not plot who's really the author's plan to be her love. I find myself guessing between Alejandro, Hector and Humberto. On some parts I think it would be the King, on other it's Hector and when I have forgotten about the two and am sure it would be Humberto, a change of events made me gasps! (I'm going to refrain myself from putting spoilers here!)

This book is well-written (applause for Rae Carson), I felt love, frustration, excitement, braveness, sadness, surprised and even had goosebumps all throughout the story. I felt for what's Elisa's going through. But the best thing I love about this book is that it does not only tells a story. It expresses a great message that NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE should think of themselves less. That for everyone, there is greatness inside each of us and all we need is the courage to show it.

My Review

Abby is just a girl who desperately wants to escape her past (who wouldn't in her shoes??), with that explained, I guess I could understand Abby's decisions with regards to her relationship with Travis. She loves Travis that's for sure, but she fears that their love for each other isn't enough when her past haunts them both.

Travis however, well... I haven't been in a very troubled environment to meet someone like him... so I'm sort of doubting some of his behavior as real life... Still, her love for Abby makes me melt and think of nothing else... what doubts am I talking about??? :D

America rocks!!! She's very real and loyal friend to Abby. She understands her, supports her and most of all, when she feels that Abby is doing something wrong, she tells her. That's how true friends are!

Shepley is a mild version of Travis, but an America to him. He's the best friend that perfectly fits for Travis. Shep and Mare are so good together :)

and Finch... I love him!!! I wish I have a Finch in my life.. "the finch" is really funny!hahaha
as Abby said, he's a perfect addition to her and America's friendship.

I have to enumerate these five characters because it's so rare to have five amazing characters in one book and I haven't even included the Maddox family yet, and Jamie Mcguire did it without much effort!
The story revolves on how Travis and Abby surpassed everything... literally everything, to be together. But... it also shows how both of them, as individual improved to maturity (for Travis) and to let go of the past (for Abby.)  I adore this story because it gave me a glimpse of every part of Abby and Trav's relationship. How they met, their friendship, jealousy, how they got together, broke up, get back together, broke up and so on and so on... The emotions are very heavy, but you'll still feel the lightness while reading it. The drama and sense of humor in this book was just perfectly combined! I even laugh at some of their fights...imagine that!haha

I've already read this four times, still I find myself laughing at some parts. I just get never tired of this book, that's how much I love it. I know I'm swooning to a book, that some readers actually rated as 1 star in goodreads. But this book really got into me. I totally want to write a longe review just to justify the couple's characters, but I guess readers just have to read it through 'til the end to understand the characters. :D

OK! I need to calm myself! *deep breathe..
I read goodreads and from Jamie McGuire's blog that there would be another book for this. It would be titled "Walking Disaster" and it would be on Butterflying Travis' point of view. http://www.jamiemcguire.com/

My Review

It's nice to know Froi deeper. I like his loyalty to Isaboe and his friendship to the guards, finally, he found home...or not.
When he was sent to Charyn to be an assassin for the king, Charyn calls for him. No matter how he denies it, no matter how he convince himself that Lumatere is his home, there is something in Charyn and the people he meets that sings to him.
Like Froi, I am loyal to Isaboe, so everytime Froi thinks of just going home, I was like "yes, just go home! just leave Charyn!" I badly like Froi to be just a Lumatere, a loyal servant to the Queen and his consort, but Froi is greater than that, so I let it go :D

Then there's Quintana, at first I don't like her, especially for Froi ( I just want Froi to be loyal to Isaboe :D) but as the story goes, things are revealed why she is who she is and not just a crazy last born.

What saddens me in this story, is that even after the curse in Lumatere, people just can't move on. The became prisoners of their past. And Charynites and Lumaterian had this hatred in each other that so deep. Well, I understand them for it. But as the story goes, Charynites sides are seen, how is it to them during the years Lumatere was invaded by their kingdom and how themselves suffer from another curse. A story how families were torn, brothers separated by lies and mothers and daughters suffer from the curse. Though I prefer Finnikin of the rock, this book was beyond deeper than the first book. This book, tells most of the mysteries. I find myself relieved and frustrated on every mystery unravels as knew mystery comes. I find myself confused for all the lies. This book put me in a roller coaster. But one thing is for sure, this book is one of a kind. The way this story was told was unlike anything else I have read and I salute Ms. Marchetta for that.

I just wished there's a book dedicated for Isaboe as the third for Quintana.

Finnickin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta

| | | 0 comments
Summary from Goodreads:

At the age of nine, Finnikin is warned by the gods that he must sacrifice a pound of flesh to save his kingdom. He stands on the rock of the three wonders with his friend Prince Balthazar and Balthazar's cousin, Lucian, and together they mix their blood to safeguard Lumatere.

But all safety is shattered during the five days of the unspeakable, when the king and queen and their children are brutally murdered in the palace. An impostor seizes the throne, a curse binds all who remain inside Lumatere's walls, and those who escape are left to roam the land as exiles, dying by the thousands in fever camps.

Ten years later, Finnikin is summoned to another rock—to meet Evanjalin, a young novice with a startling claim: Balthazar, heir to the throne of Lumatere, is alive. This arrogant young woman claims she'll lead Finnikin and his mentor, Sir Topher, to the prince. Instead, her leadership points them perilously toward home. Does Finnikin dare believe that Lumatere might one day rise united? Evanjalin is not what she seems, and the startling truth will test Finnikin's faith not only in her but in all he knows to be true about himself and his destiny.

In a bold departure from her acclaimed contemporary novels, Printz Medalist Melina Marchetta has crafted an epic fantasy of ancient magic, feudal intrigue, romance, and bloodshed that will rivet you from the first page.

My Review:

First, let me tell how this story goes...

The book tells a story of Finnikin: son of the most respected head guard of Lumatere, friend of the the future king, hunted by his past and the prophecy for him he fears the most. Together with his mentor, First man of the true king of Lumatere- Sir Topher, Finnikin of the Rock tries to survive the outside world, searching and recording the lives of their fellow Lumaterian who have escaped from their kingdom, before the day of the unspeakable.
Then a woman, who they thought has the vow of silence came through their mission. She claims to walk the sleep of their king and Finnikin's childhood friend, Balthazar. The only problem is, Balthazar was believed died during the day of the unspeakable, along with her younger sister, Isaboe. A story of a journey full of lies, doubts, deceipts, courage, hope, love, mystery, light and darkness. This story tells it all, how these people returned to their cursed land with the promise of salvation.

One of the best books I've read, if not the best. This book is so awesome, how come this is not yet in the big screen??? This is my first time to read this kind if genre and it totally blew me off guard. The book has its own world pulling me into it as I read page by page. First, the cover is so awesome, kind of like the Iron Knight.. Really!! And the names? Finnikin? Isaboe? Trevanion? Wow! So unique! This book is one of a kind. Ms. Marchetta have defined story-telling in a new level. I don't know if I could find a book as detailed and mesmerizing as this. It's like Ms. Marchetta have really lived in the Land of Skuldenore for it to be so detailed. I've never been good and geography, that's why I avoid books that have their own world and places, but this one's different. I easily understood the land, where each kingdom was without even looking in the book :D

Evanjelin is he typical heroine with a twist. She was described as beautiful and nothing more. For other books, heroins were described as so beatiful, with a flawless skin, nice hair..blah blah blah... but Evanjelin was not, she has the fair skin and bald..nice! Finnikin on the other hand, was a true warrior, a warrior with a lot of fear. Their combination was so unique. And Froi, he's like the male version of Evanjelin thus they understand each other so much. I'm expecting to know him more on the second book. But my favorite characters here are Trevanion's guard, they made the story lighter with humor.

This book deserves a five star and a movie!!!

This would be my first post, and I'm sort of a baby blogger, so please don't be hard on me.  I'll be posting here reviews of books I read. But just to put something here first, I'm going to add some from my Goodreads and continue to update this together with my goodreads :)

I hope my opinion in books could help you have an idea of good books and not. BUT, this are only my opinion. I WON'T TELL YOU NOT to read any books for I believe all books are worth to read. Though not all are fun, the fun of reading would depend on who reads it. I'll try to be a responsible blogger and book reviewer ;)
